Lickity Split SATCOM Service

A SATCOM terminal manufacturer had been tasked with finding X-band space segment capacity and needed to quickly test their new mobile terminal for military users at Fort Bragg, NC. The catch was they needed service that same day!

XTAR was familiar with this manufacturer. However, we had never done business with them as a customer, nor had their newest airborne SATCOM terminal ever been used on XTAR.   Meaning, we didn’t have any other necessary contractual foundations in place to allow service to begin nor was their terminal even approved for use on XTAR.

Never shying away from a challenge, XTAR decided to take a run at it. Our responsive team took one hour from the customer’s initial request to getting their terminal approved and them online with transmission plan in hand.

To put this into context, today’s most highly-responsive satellite operators take at least 48-hours to simply set up a contract or service agreement – and that’s assuming they have a “master services agreement” already in place. In addition, commercial operator antenna certification can take months to obtain, or years as in the case of ARSTRAT WGS certification. Even the most customer-focused organization I’ve worked for in the past would have conceded immediately that there was no way they could meet these requirements.

Though this was a demo, quick turnaround is important in multiple scenarios. For mission-critical support deployed use, rapid response can mean the difference between a successful – even heroic – mission, and tragedy. Missions can also change at any moment, creating a new list of requirements possibly not satisfied by capacity in place. In addition, anything low on the WGS priority totem pole, such as training exercises and demos, are potential opportunities for quick access to service outside of the government-owned bandwidth.
